Awka Church Planting – September 2026

It’s Church Planting Season!

“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” – Matthew 9:37–38

This September, all roads lead to Awka, the vibrant capital city of Anambra State in Southeastern Nigeria, as we prayerfully prepare for the planting and official inauguration of the International Church of Christ, Awka.

Brothers and sisters, this is more than just planting a new congregation; it’s an extraordinary opportunity for all of us to participate in the Great Commission and bring the Gospel to a new community.

The Awka church plant will bring the total number of ICOC churches in Nigeria to 20, and a total of 36 across the English-Speaking West Africa Missions.

We invite disciples, churches, families, and mission partners to join us on this exciting journey through prayer, volunteering, spiritual support, encouragement, and financial partnership.

Let us work together to see lives transformed and a strong, vibrant church established in Awka. To God be the glory, now and forever!

About Awka

Awka is the capital of Anambra State, with a rapidly growing population of approximately 500,000 residents. It is a bustling city known for its strong business community, civil service centers, and numerous government ministries and agencies.

The city is also home to prestigious institutions such as Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), attracting students from all over Nigeria. This creates a tremendous opportunity for a vibrant campus ministry and outreach.

A Brief History of the Awka Seed Fellowship

The story of the Awka church planting began over two decades ago. In January 1999, Chinedu Jude Nwosu, a young footballer from Nkwelle, Awka, moved to Lagos to pursue his football career. During a difficult injury and recovery period, he was introduced to Christianity and became a disciple of Jesus.

Returning to his hometown to recuperate, Chinedu began a Bible study in his home. What started as a small gathering has grown into a thriving fellowship, attracting disciples, students, children, and community members who attend regularly.

Supported by the Asaba Church, the Awka fellowship continues to grow under God’s blessing.

The Awka Mission Team

Today, the Awka Seed Fellowship meets in Chinedu Nwosu’s home, led by Chinedu and his wife, comprising eight disciples, including married couples and singles. They study God’s Word and share their faith within the community.

To establish the new church, Celestine Ugwu and his wife, Kinni, have been appointed as the mission leaders. They are expected to relocate to Awka in August 2026 to begin preparations for the official launch.
