2020 Lagos Staff Retreat – A Time For Renewal and Revival

The 2020 Lagos Staff Retreat held from 5-8 January at the Villa Park Hotel, Amuwo Odofin in Lagos.

It was a retreat focused on prayer and worship, personal revival and a thorough evaluation of the current spiritual health of the church with the view to forging the way forward for the church in the wake of a new decade.

The first evening of the retreat was devoted to a time of prayer in groups of men and women and personal sharing as to how each staff member was doing spiritually and otherwise. Burdens were lifted and there was a great time of refreshing.

Day Two was a day of critical analysis of the state of every region, bible talk by bible talk. The spiritual health of each bible talk was carefully considered. Recommendations were made and direction was given. These recommendations and direction will be set in motion as each region holds its own regional leadership retreat for bible talk leaders on a date before the next church joint service of Feb 2, 2020.

For the first part of Day Three, the staff reviewed the feedback of members of the church from the Church Health survey questionnaire of 2019. Feedback was very insightful and thus formed a useful tool for planning the direction of the church going forward. Five key areas were distilled from the over 700 responses of disciples.

  1. Discipling
  2. Effective teaching, feedback, and follow-through
  3. Training and re-training of leaders
  4. Leadership by example
  5. Effective small groups

For the rest of the day, the staff worked in 4 pre-selected subgroups to fashion way forward for the Lagos church in the following key areas

  1. Discipling
  2. Bible Talks
  3. Midweek & Sunday Services
  4. Membership

Each sub-group presented its submissions to the larger group for adoption.

On the final day of the retreat, each region crafted its own localized action plan based on the Churchwide resolutions that had been adopted at the retreat.

The retreat ended with worship, prayer and thanks to God. Faith was renewed, zeal for the Lord was re-ignited, the Spirit’s direction was clearer and the prayer in every heart was “Lord, strengthen our hands!” Nehemiah 6:9
